Money-Saving Strategies During Winter Weather

A chill is beginning to creep in to southeast Tennessee, which means winter weather is just around the corner. As you switch your thermostat to heat, you’re likely considering ways you can save money and make your home more energy efficient this fall and winter. Window Depot USA brings Chattanooga and Cleveland residents a few tips for lowering energy bills during the cooler months.

1. Check for drafts.

Spend some time near your windows, doors, fireplace, and other potentially drafty areas. Pay attention to whether cool air is coming in. Significant drafts may indicate the need to get new windows, a door replacement, or winterize your home with weather stripping and caulk.

2. Set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature.

Put on a sweater and a nice, warm pair of socks, and turn your thermostat down. Energy.gov recommends, “save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you’re awake and setting it lower while you’re asleep or away from home. By turning your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill…”

3. Consider the placement of your thermostat.

Whether you have a programmable thermostat or one you change manually, the thermostat location affects how well it responds to the heating needs of your home. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that, “To operate properly, a thermostat must be on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, skylights, and windows. It should be located where natural room air currents–warm air rising, cool air sinking–occur.”

4. Upgrade to new windows or doors.

If you live in an old home that doesn’t have replacement windows, chances are your windows aren’t very energy efficient. Similarly, an old door probably doesn’t have the same level of insulation as newer models. While replacement windows or doors can be a large, one-time expense, upgrading could save you money in the long haul over the many Chattanooga winters to come.
